A lot of emphasis is upon whether the water you consume is fit for drinking or not that the water for household usage is put aside here in Pakistan. This is where the fresh water amoeba Naegleria plays its card. Here we should point out the fact that only one specie i.e. Naegleria fowleri is pathogenic, i.e. it can infect humans.
This amoeba can grow anywhere ranging from fresh water streams to the underground tank in your home. It has a single way of infecting us, THROUGH OUR NOSE. The amoeba travels through the nasal route all the way up to the brain tissues. From there, the amoeba starts to damage brain tissues in an irreversible manner.
The infection causes death in ten to fifteen days as the damage to the brain is severe. Prevention is the only cure in this case. The following list contains some precautions that could be taken in account when ingulfed in a water related activity.
- Hold your nose shut, use nose clips, or keep your head above water.
- Avoid putting your head under the water in hot springs and other untreated thermal waters.
- Avoid water-related activities in warm freshwater during periods of high water temperature.
- Avoid digging in, or stirring up, the sediment while taking part in water-related activities in shallow, warm freshwater areas.
